The following numbers in your life may vary. But there is only one constant. They DO NOT define who you are, what you are worth, or what you can accomplish in your life. In Christ, you have a new name. In Christ, you are enough. In Christ, you are worthy. In Christ, you are loved. In Christ, you are cherished. In Christ, you are chosen. In Christ, you are strong.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! -2 Corinthians 5:17
These numbers DO NOT define you:
- Your followers on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram
- Your bench max
- Your age
- Your weight
- Whether you have an IPhone 5, 6, or 7
- Your ACT score
- Your bank account
- The likes you get on a post
- Number of past boyfriends/girlfriends
- Percentage you get on your final exam
- Your GPA
- Number of home runs you had last season
- Whether you are attending a D1, D2, or D3 university
- Number of friends you have
- The year your car was made
- How many acres you own
We love these numbers because they are undeniably true. Nobody can dispute these numbers. So, we like to throw these numbers around like they have the power to set us free from this prison of pride. Not only do these numbers keep us imprisoned, but they also feed the monster of comparison. This monster only comes around to show you who you are not. It will point out every non-existent flaw and start replaying your past. Then there is a part of you saying that he’s right.
It seemed like my high school best friend was comparison. I made sure my bench max was above average. I desired to get over 100 likes on my Instagram posts. I was never the best at any one sport, so comparison told to me to achieve something that wasn’t possible. I believe there is a healthy comparison that drives you to be the best, but there is also an unhealthy comparison called obsession. That is the barrier between our potential and our dreams.
This is why it is so important to find what God is calling you to do. What God ordains He sustains. When we have a dream from God, then He is willing to provide. Peter got his mission from Jesus in John 1:42, “And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas’ (which, when translated, is Peter which means rock).” He was meant to be the rock for Jesus’ church. What Peter didn’t know is that through Jesus’ ministry He would shape Peter to become the rock. Jesus provided for Peter, and He will provide for us as well.
Jesus defines you. What He has already done on the cross provides a long drink for your soul. Hold onto what Jesus says about you because God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:9). In Christ, you have a new name. In Christ, you are enough. In Christ, you are worthy. In Christ, you are loved. In Christ, you are cherished. In Christ, you are chosen. In Christ, you are strong. Live loved today.
