When finals hit everything else stops. It seems like life stops for a week until all the exams are completed (hopefully well). I know that when I write those words only a certain age group can relate to what I’m going through. Some of you all can remember it but thankfully never have to go through it again. We all have something that hits us and everything else must wait for that one thing. Fill in the black with what you want: WHEN _________ HIT. It could be when doubts hit, when heartbreak hits, when business hits, when insecurity hits, or when chaos hits.
At any given time your life can be monumentally changed for either good or bad. I don’t know about you but when I think about that anxiety is the natural answer.
Last Saturday My girlfriend, Suz and I went ice skating in Market Square in downtown Knoxville. I didn’t realize this until I got onto the ice but I have an irrational fear. I’m not the type of guy to have these fears especially because I was with Suz and I want to be strong. Although, there was a part of me terrified the whole time. My fear is that I am going to fall on the ice and someone is going to skate over my finger and slice it off. The odds of that are slim but I am not ready to depart from any of my fingers. I don’t think I am necessarily afraid of the pain it would bring. I know that would eventually go away. What scares me so much is that if a skate slices my finger off then my life will never be the same. If a skate hits my finger then I will never be the same.
For some of us, we feel the same way about some things that happen in life right now. Life hits us with things that leave us in a pit that slowly feels like home. Satan puts in our head that we deserved what happened to us. We should get used to feeling pain and sorrow, but God came to stop these lies and speak truth over your life. Jesus Christ has declared that you do not have to live with anxiety and pain. God offers the peace that transcends all knowledge. But it is only attainable through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
There are always things that can hit you, but God hits you with something as well. When Peter was at a gentiles house named Cornelius. Peter told them the message of Christ and for the first time in Acts, the Holy Spirit came upon gentiles. It says in Acts 10:44, “While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.” (NIV). You have heard the good news, that Jesus has come to save sinners, now you have been hit with the Holy Spirit.
Everything changes when the Holy Spirit hits you.
The Holy Spirit enters your situation not to make a change in your situation but in your heart. Encountering the Holy Spirit leaves you satisfied, but wanting more at the same time. Do not live in fear of the what if, but hold onto what God gives you. As a way of acknowledging and declaring the Holy Spirit in our lives lets pray this prayer together:
The Spirit of God is here now
All I need is here with me
Be still my soul
Existing is enough
Nothing can seperate me from my Father
Nothing can rob me of the forgiveness he offers
God will forever be on his throne
I invite the Spirit of God to hit my life
Let the Spirit leave nothing untouched,
but tansformed in the name of Jesus.
For Your Name is my name and my name for Your Glory,
Forever and Ever, Amen.
